Lou City 2 Lexington SC 0 As It Happened

Thursday was either the first leg of the Republic Cup presented by Commonwealth Credit Union, or the Commonwealth Cup presented by Republic Bank. I will let you decide if it’s a good idea to sponsor a trophy that shares a name with a rival bank.

I usually don’t comment on the National Anthem, but THAT was a fine rendition of “The Star Bangled Banner” by Garrett Desford and Hayden Williams. The two-part close harmony was reminiscent of The Everly Brothers. More like this please!

The mayor of Lexington must have lost a bet to the mayor of Knoxville because I can’t think of any reason why a team based in Lexington would wear any shade resembling Volunteer orange. Maybe it was based on this.

Lexington SC (Sporting Club…give me a break) has a horse on their badge because of course they do.

Their match notes are sparse because they are boring and have no history.

Speedy Williams and Cameron Lancaster are washed. Let’s get to it.

Lou City lined up as:

1-Las; 2-McFadden; 4-Totsch; 5-Ordonez; 7-Serrano; 15-M. Perez; 17 T. Davila; 23-Gleadle; 25-Wilson; 27-E. Davila; and 32-Adams (C)

6th Minute

The time wasting has started already. Cory Burke (99) in orange goes down for some undetermined reason. He gets some “treatment”, and the training staff members “forgets” the water bottles on the pitch. The center referee has to chase him down and hand him the bottles. Nothing says inferiority complex like time wasting inside the first 10 minutes.

9th Minute

None of Lou City’s hopeful long balls are making it to their desired destinations.

17th Minute

Lexington is enjoying a nice bit of possession (64%), and Lou City have a corner to defend.

19th Minute

Wilson missed a golden opportunity on a volley from about 6 yards out.

22nd Minute

Las comes for a dangerous ball and just gets there and deflects it out for a corner.

26th Minute

Serrano misses a header wide from just a few yards out. Lexington has the possession, but Lou City is getting the chances.

28th Minute

Sargeant (24) comes really close to clearing both the ball and Danny Cruz’s head when he goes for a ball that is at least 2 yards beyond the touch line. I would describe Cruz’s demeanor during and after this moment as unbothered.

38th Minute

Wilson has an effort from about 10 yards out saved and played out for a corner.

45th Minute

A LSC player does a shameful and embarrassingly slow walk to take a corner.

45th Minute + 1

Lou City gets caught in possession deep in their own half and only a collective effort from Totsch and Las keeps the ball out of the net.

Half Time

Lou City 0- Little Brother 0

Lexington is probing but not particularly dangerous. Louisville is charging on the counter as usual. I feel like Lou City plays the first half in a rope-a-dope manner in just about every match. It tends to end up working.

The halftime trivia question is a trolling one. I miss getting the picture, but essentially it asks who the best soccer club in the state of Kentucky is. Lou City needs to find a goal to prove it on the pitch.

50th Minute

McFadden and Ajago (33) start to get into it as the ball nears the end line, and both end up on the ground. Ajago absolutely loses his head and kicks out at McFadden, appearing to catch him in the face with his cleats. He gets a red card and seems baffled as to why. You kicked a dude in the face, that’s why genius. McFadden and Adams both pick up yellow cards for their parts. Lexington is down to 10 men.

57th Minute

Serrano has a good chance on a reflexive header and the Lexington keeper makes a good save. Gleadle can’t quite connect on the rebound.

58th Minute

That ends up being Gleadle’s last meaningful action as he is replaced by Goodrum and Morris comes in for Manny Perez.

64th Minute

Lou City manufacture some decent chances, but no breakthrough as of yet.

67th Minute

McFadden is highly involved in the own goal from Lexington’s Gibert (27) on a corner from Serrano. Lou City lead 1-0.

73rd Minute

Wilson’s effort for Lou City’s second of the night is cleared off the line by Speedy.

77th Minute

Lexington starts off a promising movement in their own half, but the resulting headed effort it is ultimately saved rather comfortably by Las.

81st Minute

Goodrum finally breaks his duck for the season on a fine effort from 20 yards out and Lou City lead 2-0.

84th Minute

Adams clears a dangerous effort off the line.

85th Minute

More heroic defending from Adams before Greene hits the post. Lou City look a little shaky at the end.

Full Time

Lou City 2 - “Ya Burnt” Sienna 0

Danny Cruz is not pleased with the performance. I guess I can see it. There were flashes of good play in the second half, but Lou City did struggle to get a really firm hold on the match until late.

Goodrum was obviously pleased to score. Both Phil and Danny are looking forward to the match next Wednesday at home against Minnesota United.

The Lexington box is sad. Good…
