Lou City 4 Richmond 1 As It Happened
Elizabeth’s Gallery
It’s another cup competition, and this time it’s the Jägerbomb, excuse me, Jägermeister Cup (formerly USL Cup)! I think I had a Jägerbomb in Minneapolis about 15 years ago. I live a very exciting life.
King Louie, the Kentucky Kingdom mascot was on the pitch pre-match to participate in the coin toss. When King Louie whispers something in his handler’s ear, it looks like he is trying to swallow his head. Anyway, I went to Kentucky Kingdom one day last summer, got there around 11 am and was exhausted by 5 pm because I was chasing a couple of kids around. Once again, I live a very exciting life. Kentucky Kingdom is opening up a new area in the park called Discovery Meadow. The electronic signage boards were sure to remind us about this every 2 minutes or so.
I wonder how many Kyle Adams pics Elizabeth will take tonight.
Lou City lined up as:
1-Las; 4-Totsch; 7-Serrano; 13-Dia; 15-M. Perez; 17 T. Davila; 23-Gleadle; 24-Jones; 25-Wilson; 27-E. Davila 3; and 32-Adams (C)
6th Minute
Lou City start on the front foot and Gleadle misses a golden opportunity to put Lou City in front. Lou City dominate the frist 15 minutes or so.
20th Minute
Lou City continue to create chances, but nothing comes to fruition yet. As a lower division club, Richmond’s game plan was surely to weather the first 20 minutes on the road, so job done for them so far.
24th Minute
Richmond gets a corner and sits on 55% possession. After weathering the first 15 minutes effectively, Richmond is starting to control the match a bit, or at least think they are because Lou City is obviously sitting back and waiting for counterattacking opportunities
26th Minute
Davila goes close after taking a short corner. The Richmond keeper, Pablo Jara goes down for a while but recovers and the fans in the Estopinal End give him a warm round of applause as he gets back to his feet.
30th Minute
Short corner. Nothing. Around this time, Brian Ownby starts to warm up and gets a huge ovation.
37th Minute
Short corner again. Comes to nothing again.
38th Minute
Another corner. It’s a short one. No dice.
42nd Minute
Richmond’s Darwin Espinal picks up a (BONE DRY!!!) yellow card for obstructing Davila just outside of the box on a promising attack.
45th Minute
Lou City give Richmond a chance with some sloppy defending deep in their own half. A last-ditch tackle prevents a shot.
45th Minute+2
Darwin Espinal makes another rough tackle but escapes without a second yellow.
45th Minute+3
Lou City score via Manny Perez on a rebound from a Totsch header that hits the post. It’s a ball into the box from a corner this time.
Half Time
Lou City 1 - (VA)FC Richmond 0
Hot dog for me, a corn dog for Elizabeth, a quick chat with Zach Allen-Kelly and back to work.
55th Minute
Lou City grab a second goal though a deceptive little no-look pass from Taylor Davila to Ray Serrano.
58th Minute
Richmond pulls one back via a fine free kick from Nils Seufert. Las sees it late, but there probably isn’t anything he could have done to stop it.
62nd Minute
Lou City are on the attack again and Simon Fitch’s attempted clearance finds Taylor Davila who puts it into the path of Gleadle, who quickly dispatches it into the roof of the goal and Lou City restore their two-goal lead.
75th Minute
The chants from Scouse’s House encourage Cruz to sub in Ownby for some minutes.
76th Minute
There is some NBA-style “hold me back” extracurricular nonsense which ultimately results in a card for Richmond’s Vaughan and Lou City’s Serrano. It’s much ado about nothing.
79th Minute
Serrano missed a semi-sitter to get his brace.
87th Minute
Adrien Perez deftly chips the Richmond keeper for Lou City’s fourth and final goal on the night.
88th Minute
A nice moment occurs between Ownby and Adams as Adams puts the captain’s armband on Ownby who takes the pitch to a louder ovation than any of Lou City’s 4 goals.
Final Score
Lou City 4 - Self-relegators 1
After the match I asked Cruz about all of the short corners. They were planned if Richmond gave them a certain look. Richmond obviously did but are ultimately made to pay on the long one. Ownby talks about nearing the end of his career but is obviously happy to take the pitch again after a long layoff.
Elizabeth and I will be back on Thursday to cover the first leg of the Commonwealth Cup between The Boys in Purple and The Dweebs in Green. The match is an official Kentucky Derby Festival event, so wear your suits and fascinators! The Commonwealth Cup will go to the winner of the season series. If the series ends in draw, the winner will be determined by a knife fight between captains in the parking lot. I may have made up that last bit.
