Indy #$!@-ing Eleven 1-Lou City 3 — Fleur-de-lis FC

It’s LIPAFC!

In its long and storied history, the Louisville-Indianapolis Proximity Assocation Football Contest has seen more than its fair share of memorable matches. My personal favorite has to be the 1992 contest hosted by the Indy Eleven where glorious serendipity found Indy in possession of a player named Chris Cross while Kris Kross’s “Jump” was climbing its way up the charts. They used the golden opportunity to host a “Kriss Kross” night featuring the Indy Eleven playing in backwards jerseys. This disastrous decision led to a 0-5 drubbing with Chris Cross scoring three own goals and Lou City being able to “ride like the wind” back home with all three points.

Back in present day, LIPAFC is a rivalry in the way that a nail has a rivalry with a hammer. Benton is clearly ready to see other people.

I don’t have problem with Indianapolis as a city. It’s an oasis in a wasteland to some degree. Given the choice to go do an equivalent activity in Indy versus Nashville, I would always choose Indy.

But boy, do their fans have a nasty inferiority complex. It’s manifested itself in ways in this match that both shocked and amused. I suspected something was up when the boos for the Lou City players were louder than the cheers for their own.

Lou City lined up as:

12-Faundez, 2-McFadden, 5-Ordóñez, 9-Goodrum, 11-McCabe, 17-T Davila, 24-Jones, 25-Wilson, 31-Lambert, 83-Dayes, 32-Adams (C)

1st Minute

Jones with a long throw already, which will become a theme.

2nd Minute

Goal. Indy scores early on a nice move by their #9 Williams who beats Ordóñez and Faundez. I am covered in red smoke. Indy 1 - Lou City 0.

3rd Minute

The Brickyard Battalion are a “delight”. They display all the class of a sewage plant, while providing none of the utility.

5th Minute

Goodrum wins a corner, but E-town Messi launches the ensuing kick into the White River.

7th Minute

The Battalion seems obsessed with the Coopers and Lou City. During this period of the first half the crew launch into multiple chants focused on their opponents including “F@#$ Louisville City” which will come up multiple times.

Unknown Minute because the clock near me stopped working

Jones attempts another long throw, and the Indy keeper catches it.

15th Minute

Yet another long throw by Jones where the ball pings around until the keeper finally makes a save.

18th Minute

Some bizarre misogynistic chant; something about somebody’s sister. I try to tune it out.

19th Minute

The ref misses a handball, but it is of no consequence.

22nd minute

Indy is doing a good job taking the sting out of the game. But what if they need to put the sting back into it at some point? FORESHADOWING!

26th Minute

Faundez comes out early and is lucky that the ball doesn't find the back of the net. Still…the right decision.

27th Minute

Sloppy challenge by Goodrum and he's lucky to escape a yellow card.

33rd Minute

Indy have another decent opportunity on the break, but the shot goes over the crossbar.

34th Minute

Goodrum has an amazing controlling touch in the midfield but can't get the cross in to find a teammate.

35th Minute

Lou City put some on good pressure but can't find a decent opportunity.

36th Minute

Lambert mishits a hopeful shot. Not sure what he was doing there. “F@#$ Louisville City” hits different from an 11-year-old.

37th Minute

Opportunities are coming quicker now with Goodrum missing a decent chance with a header.

38th Minute

More lack of class from the Brickyard Battalion: booing a injured player (Goodrum) followed by “F@#$ Louisville City”.

41st Minute

Goodrum appears to be actually hurt and the Brickyard Battalion chant “Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye” to a player going off injured. Did I mention classless? Ownby in for Goodrum.

45th Minute

GOAL! McFadden hits an absolute screamer! Eat my shorts, Brickyard Battalion! Indy 1 - Lou City 1.

Stoppage Time

Ownby tries a long shot that goes wide.

Half Time

Lou City 1 - Potty Mouths 1

Highlights from the Brickyard Battalion include constant swearing, taunting the Coopers for not being able to hear them, and my favorite moment in which one fan says to another rather loud and sweary one, something along the lines of “you are really on you game tonight”. Very Sweary Guy responds. “You should hear me when we start losing”. This occurred with Indy still leading 1-0. Goodbye Brickyard Battalion. You will not be missed.

46th Minute

Totsch in for Ordóñez and Dia in for Dayes.

49th Minute

GOAL! Long throw, scratch that...short one to McCabe, who sends a ball into Lambert at the back post, and he scores on a header. It is McCabe’s 30th assist in his USL career. Indy 1 - Lou City 2.

50th Minute

Elizabeth catches this query from a young Indy Eleven fan. “Mommy, why is every team better than our team?” Get used to it kid.

53rd Minute

Totsch taps one in after a free kick but is offside.

56th Minute

GOAL! Another long throw from Jones and it finds Totsch for a looping header. Hey Brickyard Battalion...we can hear the Coopers now! It is Jones’ first assist of the season despite all of the long throws. Indy 1 - Lou City 3.

58th Minute

A decent effort from Indy goes wide.

60th Minute

Faundez goes down and then shortly after so does Lambert. We may be in the time-wasting portion of the match for the duration.

65th Minute

It is getting chippy.

69th Minute

The Indy backline having a very loud and sweary verbal disagreement after a foul.

73rd Minute

It’s an Academy Award nomination for Davila the Elder as he goes down on the lightest of touches. This causes a kerfuffle. It’s much ado about nothing.

76th Minute

A mystery foul gives possession to Lou City.

79th Minute

A "Tequila" chant is started by the Brickyard Battalion for something or somebody. I love this chant. It feels like this could be stolen for the Davila brothers, IF we all mispronounced their last name like the PA announcer did in Indy, (dah-VU-lah instead of dah-vu-lah like the pronunciation guide indicates.) Sorry for the digression.

81st minute

A good chance for Indy goes up and over the bar. It just doesn’t seem like their night, which at this point their fans are definitely accustomed to.

85th minute

Serrano wins a corner. After his delivery, the ball ultimately goes wide on a header.

87th minute

An Indy player goes down near or in the box. The ref is not interested. Then there is a nice stop by Faundez on a counter.

90th Minute

There has been some really good defending by Lou City since the 2nd minute, especially after going up by two goals.

Stoppage time

It’s another nice save by Faundez.

Full time

Nails 1 - Hammer 3

Lou City starts the match by hitting their thumb but end up putting the nails in their place without too much fuss.

Post match the news doesn’t sound too promising for Phil, but he feels good enough to tease McFadden during his interview.

On to Rhode Island. (Not me. I wish. Just the team.)
