Let’s talk about Miami

I have never been to Miami, unless you count the basement of my childhood home. I feel like that needs further explanation.

Memory is always a fuzzy thing but for our purposes, this will be close enough. I think my dad bought our first VCR the summer of 1984. It was an RCA. For some reason that is lost to time in order to test out the VCR, my dad recorded episodes of Miami Vice. If you were not alive at the time, it is hard to imagine the blurry line between a cultural phenomenon and whether that cultural phenomenon was appropriate for children. That never seemed to be of any major concern in my house. I don’t have any specific memory of watching Miami Vice, but I have very specific memories of “playing” Miami Vice among other things. Quick side note that probably really needs to be lost to time: for a couple of years there was an animated series called Mister T. Yes, that Mr. T. The title character, I kid you not, was a coach of a gymnastics team travelling the world while becoming involved in and solving various mysteries. I remember “playing” this too. Anyway, back to Miami Vice. My younger brother David and I would play in the basement with 3 key items. The first one was a toy handgun. Look at this thing.

Now luckily, we grew up in the middle of nowhere and were not out on “the streets”. Can you imagine buying this today?

Second was the Miami Vice Soundtrack, on cassette obviously.

I specifically remember the theme, “Smuggler’s Blues”, “In the Air Tonight” (of course), and “Vice” by Grandmaster Melle Mel.

Now, “Vice” is a curious bit of nostalgia.

From the lyrics:
”It's everywhere you go
They said in Miami it'll never snow
Now it's snow in the palm trees, snow on the sand
It snows all day, for sixty dollars a gram
Now they're strung out and high, hung out to dry
The air that they breathe the food that they buy
They think that they can fly, but that's a white lie”

Which brings me to the third thing that we always had…

In a pinch, a lighter color of SweeTarts would have to do, but nothing quite had that cocaine look or feel (as imagined by a 9-year-old) than a crushed white Smartie. The Shaw children were always seizing the said cocaine, never dealing it, but once playtime was over, well we were taught not to be wasteful. (Of course we didn’t snort it you weirdo!)

If it makes you feel any better, I definitely watched more Golden Girls (set in Miami at virtually the same time so let that sink in). I hope somewhere in the world there exist 3 or 4 sisters who grew up in the eighties that played Golden Girls in their basement.

If you have a similarly embarrassing story, feel free to post in the comments.

Sorry for the long intro but this match was boring as hell!

Lou City lined up as:

12-Faundez, 2-McFadden, 4-Totsch, 9-Goodrum, 13-Dia, 16-A. Perez, 17-T Davila, 24-Jones, 25-Wilson, 31-Lambert, 32-Adams (C)

Dia is getting a lot of space outside.

10th Minute

Lou City is being a little wasteful with their free kicks (a theme on the evening as it turned out).

On a free kick, McFadden’s header goes wide for a corner.

15th Minute

Lou City has a decent chance on a Jones header, but it is saved.

The quote at the top of the page is a semi-obscure one from another classic TV Show, Twin Peaks. It has always stuck with me although I tend to focus on the “achievement is its own reward” part. Everyone associated with the club, knows that Lou City wants to win bigger things (although there is an argument to make that this achievement is the more difficult one and more indicative of the long season). There was much celebration, which Elizabeth showcases, but I don’t think I have even seen a madder group of players 5 minutes before a trophy lift than I saw in the post match huddle. The performance was fairly poor at a point in the season where you can’t really afford one.

The achievement is what it is. An achievement. The team will put it behind them and not be overly proud of it because there is more to achieve. I think a question we can all ask ourselves is “are we driven by success or failure, or are we just driven?” I am not sure there is a correct answer to that, but I do think people who are just driven tend to push the rest of us. Hopefully Lou City has enough of these to win the ultimate prize.
