The One with the Split Squad — Fleur-de-lis FC

The match today against One Knoxville SC (there happen to be several cities named Knoxville in the US) was a “split squad” match for Lou City as they play another split squad match against the University of Louisville tomorrow. The stadium was open to season ticket holders (or anyone else who happened to wander by and was curious) for today’s match. Knoxville won the “double” in USL League One last year, so they should be a decent test for a limited Lou City squad.

Lou City lined up as:

30-Troutman, 3-Morris, 4-Totsch, 5-Dayes, 6-Duncan, 8-T Davila, 14-Showunmi, 15-Perez, 21-Huerman, 25-Wilson, 32-Adams (C)

7th Minute

GOAL: Lou City jumps out to an early lead on a goal from Duncan, who scores on some nice build up play that included Adams and Morris. Lou City 1 -Knoxville 0

We’ve seen some pretty smooth touches from Huerman.

28th Minute

Wilson fires one on goal that is saved and goes out for a corner.

Dayes wins a corner after some fancy footwork.

Knoxville's long throw is more dangerous than it needs to be, but eventually goes out for a goal kick

36th Minute

Showunmi has a shot inside the box that goes just wide.

37th Minute

Wilson’s nice effort is blocked.

41st Minute

Morris puts one on a platter for Wilson, but he can't finish it.

This time Wilson makes a great pass to Showunmi but the keeper for Knoxville makes a great save and then on the rebound to Morris, makes another good save.

Half Time

Lou City 1 - Knoxville 0

Lou City seems to have carried over both some good and some bad habits from last season. Defensively, they are solid and are not looking like they are going to concede many chances. On the other hand, there are too many touches in the box without a clinical finish, and sometimes they try to over engineer things when they have too much possession. I will try not to read too much into a split squad, but Lou City will need a more ruthless goalscorer to step up once the season starts.

47th Minute

Morris misses a golden opportunity inside the box when his touch lets him down.

50th Minute

Morris’ shot goes high and wide.

52nd Minute

Knoxville has a nice bit of possession and gets off a decent attempt that goes out for a corner.

56th Minute

Knoxville wins another corner as they're starting to see more of the ball.

57th Minute

Perez is off to the races, but a Knoxville player brings him down earning a yellow card.

59th Minute

Troutman makes a great save when the Knoxville player takes way too many touches before taking a shot.

61st Minute

Davila the Elder picks up a yellow card for a deliberate handball while trying to win a foul.

62nd Minute

Knoxville is definitely looking more dangerous in the second half.

63rd Minute

Huerman misses a golden opportunity on a cross when his reaction shot goes just wide.

70th Minute

GOAL: Lou City is getting a lot of touches in and around the box but just can't find the finishing product until Perez scores a rebound from a corner. An academy player replaces Duncan right before the corner. Lou City 2 -Knoxville 0

85th Minute

E-town Messi makes a Messi-esque run through the midfield but can't quite beat the fourth man to try to stop him.

86th Minute

Another kid is subbed on for Perez.

87th Minute

Huerman has another go and it goes just wide again.

Full Time

Lou City 2 - Knoxville 0

Most of the Boys in Purple got 90 minutes of match action and didn’t look too fatigued by the end, so that is good sign. Personally, I thought Huerman had a good match. Morris saw a lot of the ball. Wilson looked sharp at times, but this probably is the year where he needs to step up his game. Dayes was impressive in the back.
